if we’re going to develop our own in-house tool, then we can define our own standards. sure, base some of it on the most-used practices of other tools we see, but why get hung up on the “industry standard” when everything else has been specifically developed to in-house needs?

if we’re so concerned about the industry standard, then let’s not develop something that’s already developed and widely in use by the industry.

there i got it off my chest… and it probably wouldn’t have been helpful to say for the project. so i put it here… moving on.

A project, you ask? It’s a bookmarklet. Another thing I don’t have much experience with. This one’s called attrebuke. It rebukes attributes that are obsolete in HTML5.

Well, that’s all for now. Enjoy!

So, we do secret santa at work for anyone who wants to participate. The last year (or maybe two) I opted out. But I decided to join the fun this year. My first opportunity to sneak a couple gifts on my person’s desk turned out to be a complete fail. I got caught. Let’s just say if I were applying for a job in the Secret Service, instead of a rejection letter, I would have probably been deported.

But so many times we can find opportunities in mishaps, right? I used this one to throw down some HTML/CSS/JS. Nothing too crazy, but just keeping the mind sharp is necessary with the continuing advances in web tech.

Here’s the page I set up. Then I threw a floating piece of paper in her cube that had the link on it and said “View this in Firefox!”. There’s a cheesy right-click catch, but you can get around that with Firebug/F12 if you really want to dig into the code. Like I said, nothing terribly fancy. But it was fun to punch that out in a night!

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!

Yes… hate is a strong word, but seriously. I sit probably an average of like 12 freaking hours a day!

Wake up, sit to eat breakfast, get ready, sit in the car on the way to work, get to work, sit and work… all day (sometimes I have meetings, but I sit for those too), leave work, sit in the car on the way home, sit for dinner, sit to pay bills, sit for Bible studies, sit to watch a movie, etc.

I hate sitting lately.

I’ve been kicking around the idea in my head to have my employer set up a standing desk for my cube for a few months now. Then someone posted this infographic on Google+ and finally pushed the idea into action.

As of this Monday part of my desk at work is a standing desk. My goals is to stand for at least 4 hours/day while working.

So, take that sitting! HA!

I used @font-face in a stylesheet for the first time ever last night.

I’m not really a graphic designer or huge on typography, so fonts have always scared me for some reason. I have a hard time knowing what fonts go with other fonts, and it wasn’t until about 2 years ago that I learned what serif was.

So in keeping with all of that, until now I had never touched @font-face to import fonts onto a web page. But when I signed up for the CSS Off, I had a hunch that it would be using some tasty fonts (yes, my eyes have been opened and I can now see fonts as tasty). This is exactly the reason I signed up for this thing, to stretch my knowledge and skills into the need to learn more.

So, ha! Take that procrastination… or something.

I practiced a little CSS animations syntax today using jsfiddle. I may have also come across a bug. Not sure at this point, I have to do some more testing, and I haven’t even done any searches online yet to see if others have run into this. Who knows, it might even be in the spec; I just haven’t had time to look elsewhere.

Basically, the issue I ran into was when I tried to apply all of the animations to one element by adding all three of the classes I have in the CSS, the only one that animates is the last class selector in the CSS. Not the last class in the attribute of the element, not the last @-keyframes, but the last selector. <del>You can also see that I don’t even have any of the other prefixes in the CSS besides -moz. I just wanted to post this quick, and maybe I’ll update this post later.</del>

(I learned that Opera does not support CSS 3 Animations at the time of this writing. Also weird behavior on the embedded jsfiddle in Chrome/Safari when hovering over the rotate ones [iframe blackout, text looks different...].)

UPDATE: So I looked at the spec and here is a quote from it:

In the case of multiple animations specifying behavior for the same property, the animation defined last will override the previously defined animations.

That only partly answers my question… I have animations that are all affecting different properties, not the same property. Right? (opacity, top, transform). Hmm.. more searching on this might be needed.

UPDATE 2: I posted over on the CSS-Tricks forums. I just wasn’t thinking of this the right way. http://css-tricks.com/forums/discussion/14136/multiple-css-animations-on-different-classes

Lea Verou, via Smashing Magazine, just announced a new little tool she created: PrefixFree. I think I’ll be looking into this as I gear up for the CSS Off coming up in a week (yikes).
